Sigh, I will say there is a lot of materialism going on in the A. However, I feel like you get what you are searching for. Time and again I feel like I have to wave the "all Spelman women" aren't materialistic flag.". I see it like this if you want someone to pay attention to your money, house, bling, etc and wear it on your sleeve or damn near have it on your business card, you deserve all the golddiggin in the world. I hope the golddigger finds China on your dime. As a non materialistic Spelmanite, I say to men dating in Atlanta, quit letting your little head and your business card do the dating. Think for yourself and take chicks to coffeeshops, it brings out character with the quicks. And, about these women, the age old saying is "new money talks, old money is silent.". If you aren't used to any thing then you go overboard and flaunt and are overexcessive. In the NBA, sports, and entertainment fields there is a lot of new money so there is a lot of flashiness. I'm not knocking the hustle, just explaining why you have the show. I agree with you this is a pisspoor selection of the black women in Atlanta. But then again, most people wouldn't watch lawyers and doctors of Atlanta....they love Flava of Love, so this fits right in.

Amen, CoCoa Diva! I am so sick and tired of men complaining about gold digging women when they perpetuate this madness. If you really wanted a woman who was about her business, then you would put in the requisite time, energy, and emotions into building such a relationship. But too many times men want to throw money at the problem in order to pacify women. Real women don't want your money (we have our own). We want your time, attention, and adoration. That's all free.

If I hear one more person call thee women gold diggers I'm going to spit.

    WTH?

So anytime a Black woman marries a rich man shes a gold digger?

DeShawn and Eric been together since COLLEGE! She has had several companies and currently runs the DeShawn Snow foundation.

Sheree pwned a boutiques and is curently working on a fashio line.

Lisa Wu works and has a man who obviously adores her.

Kim has a budding music career.

    Are they materialistic..yes...and?

So was every woman from every other episode of The Real housewives.

Black folk kill me...this every sister is a gold digger is BS.

    Get over yourself.
  • JJ · 1 year ago
The show portrayed the gold diggers as women who were unable to make their own money.

    Such BS

Ok so I have never spoken up on this blog, but we are speaking to some things that I have an opinion on. First, I have to ask did anyone watch the real housewives of orange county or NY? Are the lives of the women in ATL a lot different than those women? I didn’t watch the other shows, and it seems that some of the hate that we are spewing is because they don’t have jobs or careers…but isn’t that the point of the show in the first place??? So I can honestly say that if I were the producer of the show and I was casting housewives, Claire Huxtable/Michelle Obama type women in Atlanta aren’t the ones I am going to seek out first.
Secondly, I must point out that being FROM Atlanta is totally different than living here, even if you have been here for a number of years. I refuse to blame this city for the gold digging ways of many women who come here in search of a baller, your values were set waaay before you set foot on the Ga Red Clay, Atlanta just has the perception of being the place where you can come up on a baller so those women come here in search of their golden ticket
Another point is that these ladies - as loud, rowdy and totally wrong that they are - have some access (albeit limited) to certain people and things. I had lunch with an Atlanta housewife this week (she didn’t qualify for the show because she isn’t materialistic enough, nor did her husband play ball and he isn’t in the entertainment industry ;-), who is a big fundraiser in the city and serves on the boards for several non-profits (hence the point of our lunch, but I digress). She made mention of the show and one of the housewives, stating that she can call that housewives (ex) husband and get five figures from him for almost any cause. So, they may not make it into every elite event, but they are being given enough access , because they are giving money to the right causes.

I'm tempted to say who hurt you brother? Instead of trying to lamblast all women in Atlanta, GA why not deal with the rejection you experienced in the 404, 678, and 770 area code. It’s no use hiding behind your blog. It's clear you feel a great deal of pain and it’s good to embrace it not attack the women of the south. Rejection hurts but you need to face it to fix it and move on. All this stuff about women being material is a smoke screen to hide your insecurities.

Sorry bro...that's the way I see it.
  • Gordon Gartrell · 1 year ago
Um...sure. Thank you for your eloquent comments Will. Unfortunately I have not experienced the rejection you speak of. Hence the personal ban on dating women from the 404, 678, 770 area code. Being a member/native of the South I am not attacking women from the South, just making a few points. So thank you Sugar Daddy, I'm sorry Big Will.

Now Brown Sugah, you know that we love them girls from Colli Park. We are >here<.

If I hear one more person call thee women gold diggers I’m going to spit.

    G-O-L-D-D-I-G-G-E-R-S. Spit here> < please.

So anytime a Black woman marries a rich man shes a gold digger? Maybe.

DeShawn and Eric been together since COLLEGE! She has had several companies and currently runs the DeShawn Snow foundation. Everyone in Atlanta has a foundation. Next.

Sheree pwned a boutiques and is curently working on a fashio line. Everyone in Atlanta has that.

Lisa Wu works and has a man who obviously adores her. Wasn't she married to Keith Sweat?

Kim has a budding music career. What songs are on her album?

    Are they materialistic..yes…and?
Pretentious women who made their money from NBA/NFL/Music Industry dudes= Gold Digger to the 2nd power.

    It's all love boo.

I watched the New York housewives and personally the difference between the Atlanta housewives is the focus of the show/storyline. The ATL storyline from this point has been around impressing each other, spending huge lump sums of money just to impress, and just being caught up in the materialistic mentality. I never heard anyone say I spend money on namebrand because of the quality. It was more of I spend this type of money on labels because it elevates my status.

I was highly dissapointed that housewives were cast who represent the typical stereotype that America has about Blacks with money. We make our money in sports, entertainment, or illegally in drugs. Rarely do we catch a glimpse of an Obama type family were the duo is not in the typical industries mentioned above. The husbands of most of the New York housewives were business men. What about the businessmen of Atlanta? Where are their wives?

Bottom line, this show so far is not progressing the Black race. It is keeping us the same or taking us a step backwards. No matter if Barack wins or loose this election. He has moved the image of Blacks in America a step forward not only in the US but globally. I can't say the same about shows such as this or such as Flavor Flav.

CHR: Once again, you’ve gotten my attention and raised my eyebrows...This time it’s because of the disdain and overwhelming generalizations of several groups of women. I read the post on what you call DMV (women from DC, Maryland, and VA) that lack class...Now, it’s women in ATL (404, 678, and 770) that you’ve taken issue with. Let’s be clear, I don’t disagree with your comments on gold diggers. What I disagree with is finger pointing.

You make an excellent point here when you say, “Atlanta is filled with outstanding women who are doing outstanding things.” No arguments there! Atlanta is also filled with educated, hard working brothers like yourself that are doing outstanding things. That said, I challenge you to explore the other side of the argument more in your postings and less on the shortcomings and imperfections of AA women (that you’ve observed). Keep it positive...Keep it progressive...

o anytime a Black woman marries a rich man shes a gold digger? Maybe.

And that alone show's how narrow minded you are.

Pretentious women who made their money from NBA/NFL/Music Industry dudes= Gold Digger to the 2nd power.

Sounds like a lot of hate to me....
  • Gordon Gartrell · 1 year ago
@ Felecia- Now I sincerely believe that a wealth of progressive AA women exist in the ATL who are not gold-diggers, making it happen, and striving for excellence. However, let's be real for a minute shall we. The women that are portrayed on the reality show given by Bravo give you a microscopic view of the mentality that exist with "some" of the women who live in the ATL.

@ JJ- I read your blog and you raise a couple of good points with your subjects. Please note I don't have any hate in me. I'm never jealous or hate on anyone who has talents or abilities. I believe CocoaDiva said it best, "New money talks, old money is silent."
  • Felicia · 1 year ago
CHR: Again, I’m not questioning your opinion on the show. I agree that it is not representative, not productive, etc...That’s stating the obvious, and that’s not the issue I’m raising. I would just personally like to see you to move future convo forward. Looking forward to reading those posts... ;-)

I'm gonna have to go with Felicia on this one...

While I agree this show sets us back as educated folks that are doing well for themselves...I did browse through old posts Mr. GG and thought the same thing as Big Will. What happened to you?? Your love life bruises show in 'Undateable Women', 'Calling it Off', and 'How men survive a Breakup'. If its everyone else then its probably you. You've banned yourself from the many amazing women in Atlanta and DMV, so your girlfriend is from...Venus? Can we get a post on what you actually like about black women, if anything?
  • Brooklyn Finest · 1 year ago
Wow this is the best discussion yet P.O.S.H. Keep it up. Gordon Gartrell is just speaking on a plague that occurs in the ATL. Don't shoot the messenger for keeping it real. Ladies, we all know that Atlanta has women who are doing big things. Unfortunately, a few bad apples has spoiled the whole bunch. If you are offended by the term gold digger then note that a hit dog will holler. The items that GC write is funny and satire all rolled up in one. Yeah he goes overboard but dang ladies why do you think he is the habitual line stepper. I do think Gordon you might need to talk about a few positive things that black women do. But that Undateable Women piece was funny! Love the blog!
  • Mmmhmmm · 1 year ago
Bravo could have a chosen a better set of women for this episode: Doctors, Lawyers, entrepreneurs

...then it wouldn't be called the real HOUSEWIVES.
  • Mmmhmmm · 1 year ago
Also, is it okay for a man to go to school and become someone off his woman's dime?
  • rene · 1 year ago
Iwould like to note that none of these women are from georgia let alone atlanta.not a true peach on the show...how sad.
  • Garth · 1 year ago
Interesting comments. I saw the show and I would not say they are golddiggers (Atleast not all of them) However I have to wonder if they have any self worth or were they just fed scripts to follow. They all are out of touch in some way. I have never seroiusly dated someone from Atlanta but I would hope that if I wanted to find a good woman they would not act like these pigeons (Educated Birds for those who do not know)
